“But I have this [charge] against you, that you have left your first love [you have lost the depth of love that you first had for Me].” Revelation 2:4 AMP https://bible.com/bible/1588/rev.2.4.AMP
Ever been in love? The feeling you have when you can't stop thinking about that person. You are willing to do anything above and beyond. You make sacrifices and inconvenience yourself just to see them smile. You begin to think is this me doing all of this? The joy that fills your heart when you know they are happy.
When you first fall in love you experience such a fire and thrill being around the person as you enjoy their presence. Now, for those of you who are believers, think back to the day you made the decision to follow Jesus. Many may have felt that initial hunger, love, and joy to follow Jesus. But how is your hunger and love for Him today? Has it died down? Is Jesus too familiar that He no longer moves you? Do you spend time in His presence?
Our love for God is meant to increase not decrease. The way you love God today should be more than the time you first encountered Him because, overtime you grow in knowledge and understanding. How would you feel if you were in a relationship and as time went on the love went downhill? The person no longer enjoys, appreciates, or is excited to be in your presence. That would be terrible. Unfortunately we treat God the same way.
Without realizing, maybe your love for God was lost because of a painful experience. Give it to God and let it go. Allow Him to heal your heart. Is your relationship with Him based on what you can "get" from Him and not what you give to Him? Love is not only about receiving but what you can give to the other person. Otherwise your love would be self-motivated and selfish. Let's check our heart posture.
The scripture in Revelation 2:4 is a challenge to you to go back to Him. Ask yourself what killed my desire for Jesus? One way to know is if you obey Him.
“If you love me, you will obey my commandments. “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.” John 14:15, 21 GNT https://bible.com/bible/68/jhn.14.15,21.GNT
The beautiful thing about love is that it can be rekindled. Start from where you are and repent. Go back to God. He's waiting to embrace you with open arms. Pray and ask God to restore the joy of salvation. If you read this and you are wondering how to even begin a relationship with Jesus, repeat the following salvation prayer. This is for YOU!
“Dear God,
I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will.
I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen."
